Sean? Who’s Sean?

Introducing, the one, the only SEEEEEEAN! Sean, is the new kid on the block, he’s a fresh face amongst The Portlebay gang and he’s our cheerful new Sales Magician (although he hasn’t yet pulled a rabbit out of his hat, but we’re still hopeful that he will!) In true Portlebay style we gathered at The Poppery and took to quizzing Sean all about what he gets up to when he’s not working his magic. Have a read and see what we dug up:

-Not only a man that can talk the talk, Sean is also an avid baker! As well as being known to make the odd wedding cake, Sean specialises in making doughnuts and has even made a Bacon and Maple Syrup Doughnut!- We have to admit we didn’t just chose him for his sales magic…

-Sean spent three years traveling all over the world and managed to fill three passports full of stamps! He can even say he has been to every continent and we are insanely jealous!

-His favourite popcorn is Crispy Bacon & Maple Syrup! If it has bacon, Sean is there!

-Sean can frequently be found roaming around Dartmoor with his trusty partner Nova (his dog pal). The pair are keen explorers and foragers!

-He is a man with a serious passion for coffee. We are talking eight cups a day, 2 before he even leaves for work.

-We will definitely have to keep an eye on this new popcorn-enthusiast, as he has broken between 25-30 bones! That’s nearly a bone a year!

-Sean is a giiigantic Foo Fighters fan and has seen them in concert 14 times! Including in; Toronto, Ireland, Australia, Wales, Portugal and New York!

-When Sean was baby Sean, he was known for being a big biter and to protect on-lookers from having their fingers bitten, his Dad created a ‘Beware This Baby Bites’ sign which was hung either on his pram or around his neck! (Hopefully the biting days are over now!)

Meet The Marvellous Mark!

Another sunny day in beautiful Devon and another welcome to a chirpy new Portlebay team member. Today, we are introducing Mark, he has undergone the vital rite of passage of posing with with Bob the seagull and is now an official Portlebay Popcorn warrior. WOO HOO! GO MARK! It wouldn’t be an official Portlebay greeting if we didn’t investigate into what Mark loves and what he’ll be doing when he’s not frolicking in a sea of popcorn, so here’s some fun facts about him…

-Mark is our shiny new National Account Honcho and Chief Phone Chatter

-His favourite Portlebay Popcorn is Chilli & Lime- he loves his chilli and loves his lime, it’s a match made in heaven!

-Mark can also been known as ‘Motorcycle Mark’, as he has a great passion for the speedy two wheel machines and travels around the country following The British Super Bike Events (of course on his own motorbike!) Mark’s love for motorbikes began with motocross racing, when he was only 14, and has been flourishing ever since! At one time Mark had a collection of four motorbikes; a traditional bike, an adventure bike, a touring bike and a sport bike! Fancy a spin? Marks ya man!

-He has a gorgeous German Shepard, called Ellie-May, who is just over a year old and will melt your heart!

-Mark has lived in 17 houses!

-Along with motorcycles, Mark also collects beautiful fountain pens. His interest in pens started after a customer gifted Mark a fountain pen as a thank you and ever since he has loved them! Mark’s collection now exceeds 30 of these glorious creations!

-At 12 years old Mark’s music teacher told him not to sing as he sounded like ‘an old growler’ and has never sang since, not even in the shower!

Here’s a snap of Ellie-May- look how adorable she is!

Guest Blogger Emma: Why She Loves Devon

Hi, I’m Emma, one of those ‘creative people’ now living in Devon… I spend my days blogging about Devon, photographing anything and everything, creating gifts, giving social media advice and trying to get to the beach with my Cyprus rescue dog, Lola and husband Mike! I quit the corporate world 18 months ago and never looked back! Based just outside Salcombe, I love nothing more than a windy beach walk or a day on the water, always camera in hand, trying to get that perfect Insta shot! You can find my insta page here: @emmathedevongirl

How I Ended up in Devon

My family moved to Devon from The Cotswolds in 2010. I stayed in the Cotswolds with my now husband and focused on working my way up the corporate ladder, until I started craving open seas and a more creative life. I packed my bags and quit my job in 2016 and off to Devon I went. After spending my summers at our Devon holiday home as a teenager, it really felt like I was heading back to Devon for a big holiday, the only difference this time, I still haven’t left! Time goes so fast down here, one minute you have a road completely to yourself in the middle of a frosty winter and the next you are picking the smallest lanes to try and avoid the tourists in summer! I have never worked harder, or been happier in my life!

Living a Devon life is something people talk about, even dream about. More and more people want to quit the rat-race in favour of a more simple life in the country, I am so lucky to be able to do this in my 20’s. I want to share this experience with the world, show everyone how wonderful Devon is, get them to come here on holiday or even get them to catch the bug and move here!

My Favourite spots in Devon

South Milton Sands is my go-to beach in the winter, but its just too busy nowadays in the summer, I often head to some of the other nearby beaches, such as Bigbury, North Sands or Bantham to mix it up a little!

Salcombe is one of my favourites places to wonder around – if you can get a parking space! It, again, gets pretty busy over the summer holidays, but there is so much to do and there really is something for everyone. I like to take the ferry over to the other side of the estuary and walk across the coast path to Gara Rock.

Another spot that I like is Noss Mayo. I recently visit this charming place, it was so pretty and the food in The Ship Inn (a very nice pub) was pretty tasty!

Devon Delicacies

I’m a true Devon cream tea girl – cream then a little jam on top! I also live for the sausage rolls at The Bake House in Salcombe and their salted caramel brownies! I am a great fan of finding new Devon based products, such as Portlebay Popcorn!

Have little sneak peak at my blog to find out even more about Devon, maybe you’ll discover a new place to go and explore? www.devongirl.co.uk

Meet Our Mascot Bob!

Bob

Our Portlebay team is a small and passionate group of individuals that adore popcorn and all things to do with the beach, outdoors and anything that will make us giggle! This is certainly accurate for our most jolly team member, Bob, our mighty mascot!

If you haven’t yet had the pleasure of meeting this cheeky chap, then say ‘hello’ to Bob the seagull! Along with his knobbly knees and beak full of popcorn, you may notice his very stylish American themed sailor hat. This quirky little addition represents the dawn of Portlebay Popcorn, when our wonderful Chief Pop-Meisters went on a great adventure to America and found their inspiration to start hand-popping delicious popcorn in Sunny little Devon.

Bob’s Fact File:

Name: Bob

Birthday: 12th March

Birth place: Born and bred in Sunny Cove, East Portlemouth

Height: Average seagull size

Look out for Bob on our social media channels, he can be quite a cheeky bird but does love all the attention he can get!

Our Bespoke Packets are in a League of their Own!

Our small Portlebay Team are beaming from ear to ear, as we are delighted to announce our new service of bespoke popcorn packaging! We are even more pleased with the result of our debut for Warner Bros. The wondrous popcorn packets are supporting the preview screenings of Justice League, and the packets look very cool (if we do say so ourselves!).

The packets feature the main characters from the film, including Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Ezra Miller as the Flash, Ben Affleck as Batman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman and Ray Fisher as Cyborg.

Jonty White, our Chief Pop-Miester, commented on the groovy popcorn packets saying:  “As a premium manufacturer, we are constantly innovating and offering consumers new, exciting flavours and textures and this diversification into personalised packaging is another facet of our capabilities.

“For Warner Bros., we personalised packs of our extremely popular Sweet & Salty flavour with the movie’s characters.  This was a short production run, solely for the film’s three UK preview screenings, in advance of its main release to the public in mid-November.

“Popcorn is more popular than ever and Portlebay Popcorn is one of the few artisan popcorn brands that manufactures its own premium product, with sweet, salty, spicy, smoky and even fizzy options.  As such, we have the in-house capabilities to create branded, bespoke packaging and this is an area of our business which we are aiming to grow.

“We can create personalised bags of our award-winning popcorn for special occasions and events in runs of 5,000 bags and upwards.  The service can be turned around in four weeks after the sign off of artwork and it offers clients a unique vehicle through which to communicate or promote key messages.”

If you would like the chance to have your very own box of these spectacular limited edition packets, make sure to follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, where we’ll be offering you the chance win a whole bunch of them on the 17/11/2017! Good luck!

Everyday We’re Popping

The lovely thing about making your own popcorn is, well, just that. We pop it, ship it and run everything from under the same roof, which is really rather special. We have a whole host of Popcorn Flavoursmiths working away, filling our little packets of sunshine as we like to call them, and making the whole office smell delicious.

The journey from kernel to popcorn is a short one, as anyone who has made popcorn at home before would know, but there are no massive microwaves here at Portlebay Popcorn. Instead, we use bloomin’ big saucepans to heat up a mix of rapeseed oil and raw cane sugar, to give all our popcorn kernels that glorious crunch.

A whizz with a wooden spoon

It all starts with this guy, our chief popper and commander. Those saucepans are not to be trusted to pop away without supervision, and Marek is the guy to do it. From here, it’s a race against time to get our popcorn packed away; luckily we’ve mastered popping to bagging, so there’s no popcorn losing crunch and gaining that horrible polystyrene squeakiness. That’s OK for packing tellies, no good popcorn!

All beards must be bagged, luckily Angus doesn’t mind too much

On to the flavour maker! I’m afraid this stage is pretty hush-hush, so just imagine magical popcorn fairies, delicately dusting each and every popcorn puff with our Original Crispy Bacon & Maple Syrup flavour. All that natural goodness is whisked together, and then it’s on to the bagging!

Lukas Taste Testing copy

From here we do all sorts of technical tests to make sure our popcorn is the best we know it can be.

Anthony there is doing very important things, checking the bagging temperature, pressure, speed and all other kinds other technical buzzwords.

Why do you think Lucas is laughing so much? Because he has it on Easy Street, Professional Taster indeed.

In all seriousness we do need to do regular checks to measure the levels on salt, sugar, crunch and general tastiness. Lucas is the lucky duck that gets his own tasting booth to measure all of these delicious elements!

And here is the finished product! Our signature and original flavour Crispy Bacon & Maple Syrup. This is just a tiny part of the popcorn mountain we eventually end up with, but each bag is just as delicious as the last.

This is just a taster of what we do to make sure our packets of sunshine are full of that yumminess you know and love. If you’re a blogger, vlogger or a fellow popcorn fanatic, and would like to get up close and personal with our crew of poppers and our delicious produce, get in touch! We’d love to have you 🙂
