Bringing home the bacon

As we say goodbye to those long summer nights it’s time to cosy up with something simply wonderful this Autumn, and whilst you can’t buy happiness you can certainly buy Crispy Bacon & Maple Syrup Popcorn, which is pretty close in our opinion!

We all love a chance to indulge in our favourite snacks and what better excuse is there to scoff up some Crispy Bacon & Maple Syrup Popcorn than National Bacon Day! National Bacon Day celebrates this yummy meat in a variety of unusual ways with Bacon jokes, Bacon art and event Bacon outfits! The first ever wild pigs were said to be domesticated over 10,000 years ago in central Asia, where the process of preserving pork became popular due to it being easy to cook, delicious and inexpensive. In the modern world, bacon can be found in all kinds of tasty treats such as bacon chocolate, bacon mayonnaise and most importantly bacon popcorn!

To celebrate National bacon day, here are a few of our favourite bacon facts!

1. Bacon grease was used to make explosives in world war II.

2. The name for this delicious treat originated from Germany where it was referred to as ‘Bakko’, the name then developed in the 16th century to Bacoun before eventually receiving the name that gets our mouths watering today- Bacon.

3. The reason your craving bacon? That’ll be because bacon contains six types of umami which produces an addictive nurochemical response.

4. The phrase ‘bringing home the bacon’ is said to have originated from 12th century England where husbands were awarded a side of Bacon if they could swear before god that they had not argued with their wife for a year and were therefore seen as good citizens.

and finally to give you hope through these chilly winter days we leave you with our all time favourite bacon quote from chef Anne Burrell:

“Bacon always makes it better”

Mental Health Awareness Week: About Amy

As this week is Mental Health Awareness week, we have an amazing blog post to share with you, written by Amy, the author of the blog ‘Surviving Now Thriving‘. Amy has had a very incredible and inspiring journey that she has shared with us and we think she is truly spectacular! YOU GO GIRL!

photo-20-03-2018-09-04-05-e1521537045311.jpg

Who am I?

Popcorn addict, Plant-powered, Positive, Passionate Psychology graduate – think that pretty much sums me up (I do love a good bit of alliteration).

I maybe should have started with my actual name, but that’s not half as fun – I’m Amy (not Surviving as I laugh about being called) and I started blogging on Instagram last year at www.instagram.com/survivingnowthriving.

From numerous failed suicide attempts to now living every moment as if it’s my last, I created my blog to inspire others to do the same. Struggling with anorexia, binge eating disorder, depression, anxiety, acne, trichotillomania, and a make-up addiction, I know that my past struggles put me in a unique position to truly be able to help those currently struggling. And that is exactly why I do it. Because I don’t want anyone else to have to go through the torture that I did. My past does not define me, but it has certainly shaped me into the warrior of a woman I am today.

My blogging is extremely diverse covering a whole range of topics, but one of my main passions is mental health. I actually think it is becoming more normal to have suffered or to currently be suffering from some form of mental illness than not. Therefore, it’s of vital importance that we talk about it! In my experience, openness encourages openness. From sharing my story, this has inspired so many others to tell their own and also to seek help. In addition, it assists in improving awareness and understanding, and also to decrease the stigma around mental health that still prevails.

I could write a book (and I actually have been asked to) on my advice on recovering from mental illnesses. But the truth is, everyone is different. Mental health is not a one-size fits all approach, and what works for one will be highly detrimental to another. I have experienced this first-hand in that reccommendations from mental health professionals have made me a lot worse. For example, last year, in the roots of my depression and anxiety, I was told that I had two options – take anti-depressants or go into hospital. Otherwise, I couldn’t expect to get any better. And that was traumatising for me to hear at such a vulnerable time of my life, because I didn’t want to do either. I ended up sectioned in a mental health hospital against my will. I had been hiding away from the world for almost half a year and was forced into this place where I would have to be around so many people. It was a mixed ward too which meant there were guys asking me questions, and the last thing I wanted to do or felt comfortable with was talking to anyone.  Thankfully, I was discharged after 2 weeks and was able to make a full recovery all by myself.

But how did you do it?

Well, mental illness is not a choice, but recovery is. Both myself and my family had accepted that I was going to be this way forever. Locked away in my home, never seeing anyone ever again. I decided to fight, and here I am writing this now, living and THRIVING.

Here’s 10 simple tips on how to thrive:

  1. Love yourself like your life depends on it.
  2. Boring but important – nutrition – Food affects your mood so nourishing your body is a massive help.
  3. Move your body in a way that you enjoy, and also make sure to rest.
  4. Surround yourself with good people ONLY, and cut the rest – choose radiators over drains.
  5. Find what you’re passionate about, follow your dreams and never stop until they become your reality.
  6. Write down what you’re grateful for every single day.
  7. Never stop learning.
  8. Learn from the past, live for the present, and believe in the future.
  9. Train your mind to focus on the positives in everything.
  10. Spend time visualising your life exactly the way you want it to be, and watch it materialise (this sounds crackers I know, but I have manifested A LOT through doing this).

If you are currently struggling with your mental health, I want you to know that you are not alone. Be gentle with yourself and know that you can get through this. You can get through anything. Never give up. And remember, difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations. A life filled with technicolour is awaiting you.

If Popcorn was a Unit of Measurement!

After a rather entertaining discussion at The Poppery, that led to the comparison of  how tall each of us popcorn-enthusiasts are, we decided that all the many units that we could use to express how tall we are just weren’t fun enough. You know the typical units we see alllll the time; ft, in, cm, mm. We need something with a little more… pizazz! And so, we did what we do best, we introduced popcorn and measured the world in the new unit of

ppp (pieces of popped popcorn)!

After averaging a large range of pieces of popcorn we discovered how to measure anything and everything in popcorn!

The Things we Measured in Popcorn (ppp)…

The Portlebay Team!

We took a small, medium and tall member of staff and measured them in popcorn!

The Small One: Millie from marketing is our littlest team member measuring a mere 63ppp.

The Medium Ones: Diane our mother hen and Faye the lady with the money are the same height, measuring a very modest 67ppp.

The Tall One: Neil one of our mighty co-founders is the tallest in the pack, measuring in at the great height of 74ppp.

Items we Found at The Poppery

Our almighty kettle (an essential piece of equipment in The Poppery): just 10ppp

Our front door: 81ppp

A small teddy bear: only 9ppp

Steve from the warehouse’s forklift: this lift and shifting machine totalled in at 72ppp

The Poppery itself: the perimeter of our popcorn hq is 4,800ppp

and one last measure…

If we lined up enough popcorn to go around the world we would need:

1603,000,000ppp!

Roxy Hempel: 5 Ways to be More Eco Conscious…

5 ways to be more eco conscious…

The very inspiring Roxy Hempel from the Eco Edit tells us 5 ways to be more eco conscious. The Eco Edit is a lifestyle platform for the eco conscious, exploring brands that have a positive impact. This includes eco and socially conscious fashion brands, green beauty products and philanthropic lifestyle brands.

1. Give up or cut down on animal products

Cutting down or avoiding meat altogether is the most effective way you can be more eco conscious, and the great news is, it has an immediate impact!
Following a plant based diet is healthy, budget friendly, and limitless – all of your favourite meals can be veganised, its easy once you know how!

If you are giving it a go there are lots of resources available online, try the #veganuary hashtag on Instagram, of search for your local vegan group on Facebook for support and tips on eating near you.

Still not sure sure of the reasons why? The movie, Cowspiracy is a good place to start, or Earthlings and Forks over knives.

2. Plant trees for free everytime you use the internet.

Ecosia is a free browser and app you can download for your computer and devices, that plants trees on your behalf every time you use it. So far this initiative has planted over 18 million trees in developing and rural communities! It is completely free for you and works just the same as your current browser (Google, safari, etc). You can find out more and get the links to download the browser for your computer and the app by visiting the website.

3. Choose sustainable fashion brands

Fashion is a hugely polluting industry. From the textile production to the dyeing process, to the overwhelming amount of wastage, there are huge enviromental issues which we don’t even know the full extent of yet. The good news is there are tons of great sustainable fashion brand out there that do things differently. Brands that use eco friendly fibers and dyes, recycled textiles and support fair trade principles. Follow me over on Instagram, and sign up to the newsletter of my lifestyle platform Eco Edit, and receive weekly edits of the best sustainable fashion brands.

4. Say not to plastic

There is no doubt about it, our plastic consumption is out of a control and is having a devastating effect on the enviroment. There is more than 8 BILLION tons of plastic on this planet, and the majority of that is waste that will take around 450 years to decompose. If laid out flat, 10 inches deep, it would be enough to cover the whole of Argentina, the 8th largest country in the world. Join our Facebook group ‘Less plastic is fantastic’ which we update with tips and ideas for reducing single use plastic consumption.

An easy one you can utilise right away – when choosing drinks, if you’re not using your own reusable cup, opt for aluminium or glass – either of these can be recycled an infinite number of times without losing their quality, unlike plastic which can only be recycled once.

5. Go green on your energy source

Check out Bulb – they offer 100% renewable energy, they pay your exit fees from your current energy supplier AND they save you on average 20% on your energy bills a year, they will also switch everything over for you, making it completely hassle free!
Saving the planet and saving money – what’s not to like?!

Guest Blogger Emma: Why She Loves Devon

Hi, I’m Emma, one of those ‘creative people’ now living in Devon… I spend my days blogging about Devon, photographing anything and everything, creating gifts, giving social media advice and trying to get to the beach with my Cyprus rescue dog, Lola and husband Mike! I quit the corporate world 18 months ago and never looked back! Based just outside Salcombe, I love nothing more than a windy beach walk or a day on the water, always camera in hand, trying to get that perfect Insta shot! You can find my insta page here: @emmathedevongirl

How I Ended up in Devon

My family moved to Devon from The Cotswolds in 2010. I stayed in the Cotswolds with my now husband and focused on working my way up the corporate ladder, until I started craving open seas and a more creative life. I packed my bags and quit my job in 2016 and off to Devon I went. After spending my summers at our Devon holiday home as a teenager, it really felt like I was heading back to Devon for a big holiday, the only difference this time, I still haven’t left! Time goes so fast down here, one minute you have a road completely to yourself in the middle of a frosty winter and the next you are picking the smallest lanes to try and avoid the tourists in summer! I have never worked harder, or been happier in my life!

Living a Devon life is something people talk about, even dream about. More and more people want to quit the rat-race in favour of a more simple life in the country, I am so lucky to be able to do this in my 20’s. I want to share this experience with the world, show everyone how wonderful Devon is, get them to come here on holiday or even get them to catch the bug and move here!

My Favourite spots in Devon

South Milton Sands is my go-to beach in the winter, but its just too busy nowadays in the summer, I often head to some of the other nearby beaches, such as Bigbury, North Sands or Bantham to mix it up a little!

Salcombe is one of my favourites places to wonder around – if you can get a parking space! It, again, gets pretty busy over the summer holidays, but there is so much to do and there really is something for everyone. I like to take the ferry over to the other side of the estuary and walk across the coast path to Gara Rock.

Another spot that I like is Noss Mayo. I recently visit this charming place, it was so pretty and the food in The Ship Inn (a very nice pub) was pretty tasty!

Devon Delicacies

I’m a true Devon cream tea girl – cream then a little jam on top! I also live for the sausage rolls at The Bake House in Salcombe and their salted caramel brownies! I am a great fan of finding new Devon based products, such as Portlebay Popcorn!

Have little sneak peak at my blog to find out even more about Devon, maybe you’ll discover a new place to go and explore? www.devongirl.co.uk
