Introducing Pretty Local

We are delighted to introduce you to one of our very wonderful stockist, Pretty Local. Based just down the road from us in Kingsbridge, in sunny Devon, you can find the lovely Andrea and the Pretty Local HQ!

Pretty Local provides the option to have your weekly shop delivered right to your door with minimum food miles. The company offers everything from fresh seafood and meat, to fruit, veg, freshly cut flowers and all your cupboard essentials; all from a selection of trusted producers located in South Devon.

So why did Andrea start Pretty Local? “There is an abundance of wonderful food being grown, harvested or caught within a few miles of my home, but no easy way to buy it all at once. I created Pretty Local to provide a one-stop shop supporting the fabulous producers, farmers, fishermen and growers on our doorstep and bringing their produce closer to our community.” Says Andrea – and we utterly adore this idea!

Whilst living in the USA, Andrea unfortunately fell ill with Lyme disease. With no medical care, she decided that eating better would be her road to recovery. Sugar, processed foods, gluten and dairy were all eliminated from Andrea’s diet, as she focused on being healthier. This highlighted, to Andrea, the importance of sourcing her food. However, when she returned to Devon, the local produce she was looking for just wasn’t that easy to get a hold of…until now. Pretty Local became the solution to our’s, your’s and Andrea’s food sourcing struggle and we think it’s pretty amazing!

Pretty Local currently deliver to locations within the South Hams, but not to worry if you aren’t quite in the delivery territory, Pretty Local also have multiple collection points for you to pick up your delicious goodies! Have a peek here for further delivery and collection info!

Where Does Your Corn Come From?

‘Where does your corn come from?’ We hear you wonder… Nataïs!

Nataïs, are our corn suppliers. They farm the wonderful corn that is then popped and seasoned into our Portlebay Popcorn. Based in Southern France, Nataïs specialise in growing popping corn from the butterfly family (like ours) and the mushroom family! The company cherish the land in which the crops grow from and are firm believers of sustainable farming, YAY!

But why all the way from France?

In order to grow popping corn a climate of plentiful sunshine is required. As this isn’t something that is common in the UK, growing corn in the South of France is a much better idea! The terrain in the South of France is also an ideal match for growing corn and along with the sunshine ensures that there is a constant supply of popping corn being produced.

The Farmers’ Partnership

As Nataïs believe that sustainable farming  is essential, the company focus on using local resources and expertise. A major part of utilising local resources is the partnership that Nataïs have with their farmers. Today there are a total of 200 farmers partnered with the company, all of which are very highly valued.

The company has established a tailored procedure to ensure all the Nataïs farmers consistently grow and carry out the same practices. This procedure includes meeting with all farmers on a regular basis and matching their soil and climate conditions. They also frequently exchange ideas regarding improvement techniques, seed selection and best growing practices – especially regarding innovation and sustainability.

The Story of Nataïs…

Founder and president of Nataïs, Michael Ehmann grew up on a farm in Germany with his family, which inspired him to become a farmer and discover new practices with the land. At the age of 24 Michael took a trip to America where he met a popcorn farmer. This encounter sparked the idea that he could grow popcorn at his family farm in France. With this new and exciting idea he purchased 2kg of seeds, popped them in his suitcase and whisked them home to France.

Over the first few years Michael experimented a lot and spent time testing out all kinds of techniques, until he finally produced the desired outcome, which was specifically created for the soil and climate in the South of France. After eventually perfecting farming the corn, he was then faced with a whole new challenge, getting his product into the market. Those that he approached with his corn were suspicious of a French man growing popping corn. Facing this difficult situation Michael took to visiting a wide range of plants and customers to gain a further understanding into the industry.

After gaining this new insight into the farming of popping corn, Michael then met Jérôme Réthoré (now General Manager of Nataïs).  Jérôme shared his expert knowledge of the popping corn industrial process and together they took the business further.

We love the passion and values that drive Nataïs and truly think they are a super cool company! Three cheers for our wonderful popping corn supplier! HIP-HIP HOORAY, HIP-HIP HOORAY, HIP-HIP HOORAAAAY!

The Portlebay Team go to Clip n Climb

In an attempt to start the year right our Portlebay team decided that we would chose an active and energetic team building activity. Living in beautiful Devon, surrounded by beaches and water based activities, our team couldn’t quite reach a consensus to jump in the water during this cold, drizzly winter period, and so, we decided Clip n Climb was the perfect group activity!

If you aren’t familiar with Clip n Climb then you certainly need to be! A bright and colourful world of climbing challenges, which although has been designed for the youngsters of today, is a truly great and enjoyable challenge. With over 30 climbing walls and obstacles to chose from and more than 35 Clip n Climb centres in the UK, this really is something we would recommend for all adults and kids (even if you don’t have little ones!). If you are also looking for a holiday activity when abroad look out for Clip n Climb, as the centres which started all the way over in New Zealand, are now all over the world! Ohhhhh, cool!

Our team pulled on our favourite Portlebay tops, laced up our trainers and very excitedly headed to Clip n Climb. Once we arrived we were greeted by the marvellous array of colours and very friendly smiling staff! After a quick briefing, we hopped into our harnesses and were let loose! Straight away there was an intense air of competition between all of the staff. We battled against each other on the timer, speed wall, the see-through, Face To Face wall which allows you to see your component on the other side and the ultimate, The Stair Way to Heaven. The Stair Way to Heaven (in the picture below) was our favourite climb.

Stair Way to Heaven

Although it was a climb that only one person could do at a time, we each watched and cheered each other on, as we conquered the very intense green poles. One by one we took a deep breath and marched (or bum shuffled) our way to the top pole, where you then have to jump down to be reunited with the floor.  This really highlighted who was a brave Portlebay warrior and who was… less of a warrior.

As you can tell we all had such a great time, even those that were a little unsure at first, and we will definitely be returning to improve our climbing skillz.

Meet Our Mascot Bob!

Bob

Our Portlebay team is a small and passionate group of individuals that adore popcorn and all things to do with the beach, outdoors and anything that will make us giggle! This is certainly accurate for our most jolly team member, Bob, our mighty mascot!

If you haven’t yet had the pleasure of meeting this cheeky chap, then say ‘hello’ to Bob the seagull! Along with his knobbly knees and beak full of popcorn, you may notice his very stylish American themed sailor hat. This quirky little addition represents the dawn of Portlebay Popcorn, when our wonderful Chief Pop-Meisters went on a great adventure to America and found their inspiration to start hand-popping delicious popcorn in Sunny little Devon.

Bob’s Fact File:

Name: Bob

Birthday: 12th March

Birth place: Born and bred in Sunny Cove, East Portlemouth
