The Winning Engagement Story!

We recently launched a competition in honour of the Royal Wedding. We asked our lovely popcorn lovers to send in their engagement stories, for the chance to win ninety bags of our Portlebay Popcorn, four big tubs of scrumptious Cranch’s sweets and a personalised ring box from Clouds & Currents, for their own wedding. It was an exciting nine days, as we received lots of lovely stories from many wonderful couples! However, there could only be one winning story… and we just LOVED Liz and Seb’s engagement!

It was such a dreamy story,  we thought it just had to be shared with you all, so keep reading to hear the winning story!

Liz and Seb’s Engagement- As Told By Liz

Cruising the Norwegian Fjords last month, my partner proposed at the base of Briksdal Glacier. My parents were on the cruise with us and Mum had the responsibility of looking after the ring.

We walked through the mountains, up towards the glacier, with me not having a clue of what was to come. We took some truly amazing photos and were in absolute awe of the beautiful setting at the lake and glacier, but time was ticking on and we had to walk back to get our coach. Seb was lagging behind, so I suggested we head off and so walked off with my folks. Luckily, my Mum knew what was about to happen and suggested I go back to Seb and catch them up later. I went back to the lake and joined Seb, where he started talking about how long we’d been together and that it was the happiest he’d ever been. I jumped in at this point and corrected him on some of the time frames, still oblivious to where the conversation was leading. We took a selfie with the snow capped mountains in the background and as I turned around to see him, he was on one knee. He looked so nervous and was so red, but he managed to ask ‘will you marry me?’, to which I swore in shock. I looked to my left and a lady happened to be near by and was clapping and crying, as I turned back to him, still on the floor, he asked ‘Is that a yes?!’. I laughed and said ‘of course I will!’ and he placed the ring on my finger. We were both a bit dumbstruck by this point and not sure what was left to do other than run back down from the glacier and tell random people that we’d just got engaged, until we found my folks. My dad cried and my mum thanked the Lord she no longer had the ring.

Now let me tell you, that poor ring had been on a crazy ride. I almost found it on the first day of our trip when rummaging around in mum’s bag for a pen. Then she left her bag in a bar after the cruise emergency evacuation talk, and then, she locked it in the safe and forgot the code!! She was understandably elated when Seb finally asked for it back at the start of our trek to the glacier. So Norway, especially that Glacier, will always have a place in my heart. It was a perfect, picturesque setting for the most unexpected proposal.

We truly loved this story and wish the lovely couple a happy and healthy future, with lots of popcorn!

Bus N Breakfast Competition! #win

We love everything to do with adventure and the outdoors, we’re talking; paddle boarding, hiking, swimming, surfing, kayaking, exploring- we love it all! This summer we want to see what adventures you encounter (be that big or small!) We are offering the chance to win three-nights stay on Bus n’ Breakfast and enough popcorn to fuel your next summer expedition. To be in with a chance of winning this super exciting prize, make sure you keep a look out for our social media posts with the routes of entry, the competition will be live from the 20th June 2018!

A Little Bit About Bus N Breakfast

The story started back in 2015 when Tom was working as a fireman in Canada and bought the bus off an elderly gentleman in Calgary, Alberta. He invested the next few months to strip out and convert the bus into a small home. When winter finally rolled around, the bus was parked up in a tiny ski town in the central Kootenay ranges called Revelstoke, famed for its biblical snowfall. Luckily the renovation stood the test and Tom lived in the bus for the Canadian winter, enjoying the access to the mountains she allowed.

The following Autumn, Tom’s wife Ella flew out to western Canada to meet him and the bus, to help embark on the huge 21 day drive across the North American continent to Halifax, Nova Scotia. (Not without hiccup!) From Halifax she was carefully placed on a boat setting sail for the sunny shores of Southampton.

Ella and Tom jumped on the next plane and followed suit. Once in England they realised that the ship had clearly braved “storm Barbara” during its voyage and some bits of the bus were looking a little worse for wear, so the decision was made to semi-gut, re-decorate and improve, making ‘mark 2!’.
She now rests in a sunny little field, surrounded by Oak Trees here in the South West, where she is regularly visited by those looking for their next adventure.

Bus n Breakfast is a home from home with double bedroom, bathroom complete with shower, on demand hot water and toilet, a kitchen with an oven, hob, sink and breakfast bar, as well as a fold down table and a sofa situated in front of a toasty log burner for the cooler evenings! Powered by solar panels on the roof, there are USB ports situated in the living area and bedroom for when you need access to the outside world and lights throughout. The bus is the perfect place to stay for those looking for somewhere a little unique to relax and unwind.

Meet Tina: Surf, Sup & So Very Cool!

Tina Beresford is a surfer living in Cornwall, who is part of the Gul Surfing Team, that compete in three different surfing disciplines in the UK and abroad. She has very kindly given us an insight into her very cool surfing life and we wish we were as cool and talented as her!

How did you get into surfing?

I had always wanted to try surfing and at the age of 18 I finally got the chance on a university surf trip to North Wales. I loved it and was instantly hooked! It shaped my future as I later took on the role as the captain of my university surf club, organising all the trips and working to get as many people surfing with me as possible! I then travelled for a year to surf spots around the world, to improve and experience warm water surfing. Following this amazing experience, I slowly moved south from Manchester to Cornwall in order to catch more waves and meet similar minded surfing friends.

What made you get into competitive surfing?

Apart from the few surf competitions I competed in at University, when I couldn’t really surf, I made a late entrance into competitive surfing at the age of 28 in; longboard, shortboard and stand-up paddleboard surfing disciplines. I always liked the idea of competing and after over thinking about why I should/shouldn’t do it, I just went for it entering every surfing competition going, with the simple aim of becoming a better surfer!

What have been your competition highlights so far?

Last year I was lucky to compete for England, at the ISA Worlds Standup Paddleboarding championships in Denmark, where I placed 13th in the world for Womens Sup Surfing. This was the third time I’ve represented my country, abroad in sup surfing, with the first being in France in June 2016 and then at Cloudbreak in Fiji in November 2016, with some of the best surfers from around the world! In Fiji, I came 12th in the women’s event and got a real taste of what it’s like for surfers that compete internationally, on the best reef based waves in the world!

My aim for this year was to make it to the final of a British Longboard Union event, which I reached last week, at the Fistral Beach event. I claimed 1st place in the Womens Longboard open! This was a real competition highlight and I’m hoping the rest of the year will go just as well for my longboarding.

I’m lucky to have had so many great experiences during the last 4 years competing in surf events. A few of my other highlights include; winning the National Sup Surfing womens event at Watergate twice, experiencing Boardmasters World Surf League events, competing with Britain’s best shortboards in Thurso, making the womens semi finals and coming second in the English Nationals senior womens shortboard event. I’ve surpassed what I expected to achieve!

Favourite Surf spots?

This is a hard question as there are so many great surf spots in Cornwall. Some of the most well-known are on my favourites list such as; Fistral beach, Watergate, Crantock, Godrevy and Sennen. Outside of Cornwall I’ve been lucky to surf some amazing waves such as Cloudbreak in Fiji, Jeffery’s Bay in South Africa, The Pass in Byron Bay, Thurso in Scotland, Hossegor beach breaks in France, Blacks in Southern California…..to name a few! So many more I hope to travel to and experience!

What advice would you give to those learning and wanting to progress?

If you are a new beginner surfer, it’s probably a good idea to seek out surfing lessons with a qualified Surfing England surf school, to learn quicker and in a safe environment.
Remember that “float is your friend” in most British waves and should allow you more time on your feet experiencing riding a wave. Many people seem to buy a small board too soon and have trouble getting up on waves.

It’s also essential to get a good quality wetsuit to enjoy surfing in cool to cold British waters, plus some gloves, boots and a hood for the very coldest months. Being warmer improves the experience of surfing, you can have longer surf sessions and keeping warm can help prevent injuries. The wetsuit should be well sealed keeping in a layer of water which is warmed by the body and prevents you from losing too much heat while in the water. So, it is sometimes worth paying more for a higher specification wetsuit such as the one I wear, the Gul Viper which has fluid seams.

Finally, get in the sea as often as you can to gain experience and fitness, and remember to have fun! Surfing can sometimes be frustrating but it is also a very rewarding sport!

Check out Tina’s Instagram page to follow her surfing journey! We are certainly inspired and will be in the water this summer (we’ll wait for the sunshine before jumping in though!)
