Some of Our Favourite Local Cream Teas!

Today is a very, VERY important day. We’re sure you all know, because it’s just one of the most wonderful days of the year, but just incase you don’t… IT’S NATIONAL CREAM TEA DAY! WOO! Grab the jam, grab the cream, it’s time for a West Country party.

As we are from the home of Cream Tea’s, we decided we best let you all know where to find some of the best spots in Devon, to feast on a traditional Cream Team!

Also, do help us settled the ever ongoing argument of cream or jam first?! It’s certainly a debate here at The Poppery and we need to put it to bed for once and for all! Are you a Devon Cream Tea-er or a Cornish Cream Tea-er? (See the image below to distinguish a Cornish and Devonian scone.)

Avon Mill

The first spot that we would like to introduce you to is Avon Mill. Avon Mill, is primarily known for being a really rather gorgeous garden centre, with a few little boutique shops, a gallery and a very lovely cafe (that serves a deeeelicious Cream Tea!) This is a great place to visit if your looking to have a mooch around and a munch! Opposite the garden centre is also a gorgeous grassy area with a pretty river- perfect for a sunny visit!

The Two Bridges Hotel

Next on our delicious Cream Tea list is the Two Bridges Hotel. Situated in the breathtaking Dartmoor National Park, the Two bridges Hotel is a very beautiful place to visit. With plenty of magnificent walking routes nearby, you can easily spend a whole day enjoying the scenery and after treating yourself to a well deserved Cream Tea! (Sounds like a perfect plan to us!) Oh and for those of you that like to take a pup with you when you walk, the Two Bridges is also dog friendly and will warmly welcome any four legged friends.

Dart Marina Spa & Hotel

Another venue that hosts a magical Cream Tea is Dart Marina Spa & Hotel, in Dartmouth. Situated right by the River Dart, the gorgeous Dart Marina Spa & Hotel offers a lovely outdoor space to soak up the sun and watch the boats come and go; the ideal setting to enjoy a very delicious Cream Tea. Dartmouth is certainly the perfect location on a sunny Saturday- explore the town on foot, explore the sea via kayak or take the ferry across the water and experience a very scenic coastal walk- then a Cream  Tea to finish! YUM!

We hope you make the most of National Cream Tea Day wherever you are and make sure you let us know whether you eat your scones in the Devonian or Cornish style!

A Little Bit About Bus N Breakfast

The story started back in 2015 when Tom was working as a fireman in Canada and bought the bus off an elderly gentleman in Calgary, Alberta. He invested the next few months to strip out and convert the bus into a small home. When winter finally rolled around, the bus was parked up in a tiny ski town in the central Kootenay ranges called Revelstoke, famed for its biblical snowfall. Luckily the renovation stood the test and Tom lived in the bus for the Canadian winter, enjoying the access to the mountains she allowed.

The following Autumn, Tom’s wife Ella flew out to western Canada to meet him and the bus, to help embark on the huge 21 day drive across the North American continent to Halifax, Nova Scotia. (Not without hiccup!) From Halifax she was carefully placed on a boat setting sail for the sunny shores of Southampton.

Ella and Tom jumped on the next plane and followed suit. Once in England they realised that the ship had clearly braved “storm Barbara” during its voyage and some bits of the bus were looking a little worse for wear, so the decision was made to semi-gut, re-decorate and improve, making ‘mark 2!’.
She now rests in a sunny little field, surrounded by Oak Trees here in the South West, where she is regularly visited by those looking for their next adventure.

Bus n Breakfast is a home from home with double bedroom, bathroom complete with shower, on demand hot water and toilet, a kitchen with an oven, hob, sink and breakfast bar, as well as a fold down table and a sofa situated in front of a toasty log burner for the cooler evenings! Powered by solar panels on the roof, there are USB ports situated in the living area and bedroom for when you need access to the outside world and lights throughout. The bus is the perfect place to stay for those looking for somewhere a little unique to relax and unwind.

Guest Blogger Emma: Why She Loves Devon

Hi, I’m Emma, one of those ‘creative people’ now living in Devon… I spend my days blogging about Devon, photographing anything and everything, creating gifts, giving social media advice and trying to get to the beach with my Cyprus rescue dog, Lola and husband Mike! I quit the corporate world 18 months ago and never looked back! Based just outside Salcombe, I love nothing more than a windy beach walk or a day on the water, always camera in hand, trying to get that perfect Insta shot! You can find my insta page here: @emmathedevongirl

How I Ended up in Devon

My family moved to Devon from The Cotswolds in 2010. I stayed in the Cotswolds with my now husband and focused on working my way up the corporate ladder, until I started craving open seas and a more creative life. I packed my bags and quit my job in 2016 and off to Devon I went. After spending my summers at our Devon holiday home as a teenager, it really felt like I was heading back to Devon for a big holiday, the only difference this time, I still haven’t left! Time goes so fast down here, one minute you have a road completely to yourself in the middle of a frosty winter and the next you are picking the smallest lanes to try and avoid the tourists in summer! I have never worked harder, or been happier in my life!

Living a Devon life is something people talk about, even dream about. More and more people want to quit the rat-race in favour of a more simple life in the country, I am so lucky to be able to do this in my 20’s. I want to share this experience with the world, show everyone how wonderful Devon is, get them to come here on holiday or even get them to catch the bug and move here!

My Favourite spots in Devon

South Milton Sands is my go-to beach in the winter, but its just too busy nowadays in the summer, I often head to some of the other nearby beaches, such as Bigbury, North Sands or Bantham to mix it up a little!

Salcombe is one of my favourites places to wonder around – if you can get a parking space! It, again, gets pretty busy over the summer holidays, but there is so much to do and there really is something for everyone. I like to take the ferry over to the other side of the estuary and walk across the coast path to Gara Rock.

Another spot that I like is Noss Mayo. I recently visit this charming place, it was so pretty and the food in The Ship Inn (a very nice pub) was pretty tasty!

Devon Delicacies

I’m a true Devon cream tea girl – cream then a little jam on top! I also live for the sausage rolls at The Bake House in Salcombe and their salted caramel brownies! I am a great fan of finding new Devon based products, such as Portlebay Popcorn!
