World Photography Day

At Portlebay we believe that life isn’t purely about large, exciting day trips or hugely memorable land marks like a birthday or wedding (although these are pretty important!), it’s also about cherishing the little moments and the simple, tiny things that bring joy to your every day life (like munching on your favourite flavour of popcorn). A very wise photographer once said:

“Taking pictures is savouring life intensely, every hundredth of a second.”
— Marc Riboud

For us this quote reminds us to be grateful for even the littlest things that make us smile and also allows us to admire the amazing talent of photography. Since today is world photography day, photography guest blogger Sarah (Checkered_photography) spoke to us about her photography journey and gave us a few top tips on how to take photos that do truly allow you to savour life in one of the most wonderful ways!

  1. How did your passions for photography initially come about?

When I was younger my dad was always really good at photography he then passed me down one of his cameras and I have been addicted ever since.

2. How long have you been taking photos for?

I have had my own photography business now for 5 years.

3. What is it you find so wonderful about photography and why do you love it?

I am actually quite a shy and reserved person, but photography allows me to show other people what I see and allows me to express my feelings through the imagery that I produce, along with giving me the confidence to talk to anyone when I have my camera in my hand.

4. What is your favourite genre of photography and why?

I don’t actually want to pin it down and say I have a favourite. As you can imagine living here in Cornwall it allows me to be on the beach whenever I wish to be, so a lot of my photography is based in and around the sea.

5. What would be your top 5 photography tips?

  1.             Always be original, never set out to copy someone else you need to have your own style.

  2.            Stay relaxed. I can be way over critical of my work.

  3.           Keep learning, you can never take too many photos.

  4.            Stay confident. I have had a lot of tough life situations but my photography has always got me through them.

  5.   Be aware of your surroundings. Take in as much as possible when you are photographing, it will shine through in your imagery

Meet The Marvellous Mark!

Another sunny day in beautiful Devon and another welcome to a chirpy new Portlebay team member. Today, we are introducing Mark, he has undergone the vital rite of passage of posing with with Bob the seagull and is now an official Portlebay Popcorn warrior. WOO HOO! GO MARK! It wouldn’t be an official Portlebay greeting if we didn’t investigate into what Mark loves and what he’ll be doing when he’s not frolicking in a sea of popcorn, so here’s some fun facts about him…

-Mark is our shiny new National Account Honcho and Chief Phone Chatter

-His favourite Portlebay Popcorn is Chilli & Lime- he loves his chilli and loves his lime, it’s a match made in heaven!

-Mark can also been known as ‘Motorcycle Mark’, as he has a great passion for the speedy two wheel machines and travels around the country following The British Super Bike Events (of course on his own motorbike!) Mark’s love for motorbikes began with motocross racing, when he was only 14, and has been flourishing ever since! At one time Mark had a collection of four motorbikes; a traditional bike, an adventure bike, a touring bike and a sport bike! Fancy a spin? Marks ya man!

-He has a gorgeous German Shepard, called Ellie-May, who is just over a year old and will melt your heart!

-Mark has lived in 17 houses!

-Along with motorcycles, Mark also collects beautiful fountain pens. His interest in pens started after a customer gifted Mark a fountain pen as a thank you and ever since he has loved them! Mark’s collection now exceeds 30 of these glorious creations!

-At 12 years old Mark’s music teacher told him not to sing as he sounded like ‘an old growler’ and has never sang since, not even in the shower!

Here’s a snap of Ellie-May- look how adorable she is!

Guest Blogger Emma: Why She Loves Devon

Hi, I’m Emma, one of those ‘creative people’ now living in Devon… I spend my days blogging about Devon, photographing anything and everything, creating gifts, giving social media advice and trying to get to the beach with my Cyprus rescue dog, Lola and husband Mike! I quit the corporate world 18 months ago and never looked back! Based just outside Salcombe, I love nothing more than a windy beach walk or a day on the water, always camera in hand, trying to get that perfect Insta shot! You can find my insta page here: @emmathedevongirl

How I Ended up in Devon

My family moved to Devon from The Cotswolds in 2010. I stayed in the Cotswolds with my now husband and focused on working my way up the corporate ladder, until I started craving open seas and a more creative life. I packed my bags and quit my job in 2016 and off to Devon I went. After spending my summers at our Devon holiday home as a teenager, it really felt like I was heading back to Devon for a big holiday, the only difference this time, I still haven’t left! Time goes so fast down here, one minute you have a road completely to yourself in the middle of a frosty winter and the next you are picking the smallest lanes to try and avoid the tourists in summer! I have never worked harder, or been happier in my life!

Living a Devon life is something people talk about, even dream about. More and more people want to quit the rat-race in favour of a more simple life in the country, I am so lucky to be able to do this in my 20’s. I want to share this experience with the world, show everyone how wonderful Devon is, get them to come here on holiday or even get them to catch the bug and move here!

My Favourite spots in Devon

South Milton Sands is my go-to beach in the winter, but its just too busy nowadays in the summer, I often head to some of the other nearby beaches, such as Bigbury, North Sands or Bantham to mix it up a little!

Salcombe is one of my favourites places to wonder around – if you can get a parking space! It, again, gets pretty busy over the summer holidays, but there is so much to do and there really is something for everyone. I like to take the ferry over to the other side of the estuary and walk across the coast path to Gara Rock.

Another spot that I like is Noss Mayo. I recently visit this charming place, it was so pretty and the food in The Ship Inn (a very nice pub) was pretty tasty!

Devon Delicacies

I’m a true Devon cream tea girl – cream then a little jam on top! I also live for the sausage rolls at The Bake House in Salcombe and their salted caramel brownies! I am a great fan of finding new Devon based products, such as Portlebay Popcorn!

Have little sneak peak at my blog to find out even more about Devon, maybe you’ll discover a new place to go and explore? www.devongirl.co.uk
